The 2290 Road Tax, officially known as the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), is a federal excise tax required by the IRS for any commercial vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that operates on public highways.
The IFTA License—short for International Fuel Tax Agreement—is required for qualified motor carriers that operate in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions (U.S. states and Canadian provinces). It simplifies fuel tax reporting for commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more or vehicles with three or more axles.
